I had a conversation with Lance Reader, the owner of Krank Golf, a couple of years ago when I bought some woods from him. He pointed out, as these articles show, that keeping your lower body quiet and still is a major key to a great swing. It’s the opposite of what everyone else teaches. It’s works great for me when I remember to do it.

We are all taught to hit the ball in front of us. Unfortunately that is a misconception that causes so many problems. It’s one of the main optical illusions of golf.

I could never understand how to keep the grip in front of the head while trying to hit the ball in front of me. Believe me, I’ve tried. It can’t be done and is very frustrating..

Then, after so many years of hacking, I had an ah-ha moment. The pros DO NOT hit the ball in front of them. Well, they do, but only in relation to their lower body. However, in relation to their upper body (that’s the part that has the arms that have the hands that hold the club) they’re actually hitting closer to their right side (for right handed golfers.)

Therefore, the upper body turn is one of the most critical parts of the swing. You have to be turned so you are almost facing the target when you make contact with the ball. I.e., the ball is about at your side (in relation to the upper body) at contact.

Having said that, you now know how to keep the grip ahead of the clubhead at contact. And, you now know one of the main points of power.
