If you have heel contact or the occasional “hosel-rocket” try getting your hands closer to your legs and body through impact. www.mcdanielgolf.com. I started working this concept and it did help my swing.

Power from Keeping arms close to your body — 2 Comments
No matter what i do I only swing it 160 yards I try to cock my wrist uncock it body swing arm swing nothing helps.David
I have a similar problem. I’m 6′ 1″, 185 lbs and one of the guys in my foursome is a foot shorter than me but can outdrive me by 50 to 100 yards. The reason is that I cast my club. I.e., I release way to early and lose a lot of power.
Lately, I’ve been taking the advice of a long ball hitter that I talked to once. I said to keep my lower body still, especially in the backswing. So now I move nothing but my arms in the backswing and that keeps me in position to make good contact. No swaying, no moving backwards or forwards. When I then downswing, I hit the ball on the sweet spot and get good distance. Not great, just good.
I’ve tried holding the release of the club to gain power and it just doesn’t work for me, so I know how you feel. I guess we just have to work with what we have.
Someone once told me to play OMG – old man’s golf. He said hit it straight, just enough that you can get on the green in regulation. Then two put. Hah – if I could only two put.
Enjoy your game. Let me know if you find out any secrets to gaining distance.
